2 members of Kent Harrison Search and Rescue assisted with the search for a 24 year-old male in the small remote village of Klemtu, north of Bella Bella. The search was suspended on 2012/05/10 after almost a week of searching by the community, RCMP and over 20 SAR volunteers from 11 BC SAR groups.

Search 2012/04/28

The team was paged at 1200hrs on 2012/04/28 by the RCMP to assist in locating a female subject who had fallen 1,000′ from a tandem hang glider flight on Mt Woodside. SAR members from several Fraser Valley teams were training with Valley Helicopters at Hope and were able to divert to the accident scene to assist.

Initial information from the pilot of the tandem glider established a last known position (LKP), but a ground search of the area was done with no sign. Other paragliders on scene felt that the subject was closer to the launch site, resulting in new areas being searched, still with negative results.

A paraglider who had assisted in the search of the initial area then revealed he had found a shoe, but had dismissed it. The description of the shoe fit the description of the tandem hang glider pilot’s, who had lost it as the subject fell. Accurate tracking of the initial search area allowed the SAR members to return to the area, locating the subject deceased at 1929hrs. 11 Kent Harrison SAR members were assisted by 18 Chilliwack SAR members for a total of 240 searcher-hours.

Medical Rescue 2012/04/06

The team was paged at 17:08 to respond to Mt Woodside to assist the British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) in extricating an injured paraglider. The subject had encountered difficulty when his reserve chute deployed, sending him into trees, south of the highway. He hit a tree and fell 30 feet to the ground. SAR members assisted paramedics to package and transport the pilot to an awaiting ambulance.

Meanwhile, the Agaassiz Fire Department had been dispatched to manage a landing zone for a medivac helicopter. Once on board the ambulance, the subject was transported approximately 2 Km to the helcopter and flown to a Lower Mainland hospital.

Search 2012/03/16

The team was paged at 18:00hrs on 2012/03/16 to assist the RCMP in investigating a vehicle in Morris Lake. A resident in the rural area had seen what he thought was a vehicle in the water. RCMP asked SAR to confirm no-one was in the vehicle. 4 SAR members accessed the vehicle in a swiftwater raft in shallow water. After searching the vehicle and the immediate area, SAR determined that there were no subjects. Information on the vehicle was passed to the RCMP. 30 searcher hours.

The team was paged at 17:05 to respond to Seabird Island near Agassiz to assist the RCMP with a search for a despondent female. The subject was located by family members just as SAR arrived on scene. 11 searcher hours.
