The team was paged at 02:55 to assist the RCMP in locating a male lost at Hemlock Valley. The subject called for help just after midnight when he claimed he had walked away from his rental chalet and was now lost. No further contact could be made. KHSAR arrived on scene and were in the process of deploying search teams when the RCMP found the male at a chalet while making enquiries. 24 searcher hours. Chilliwack SAR were stood down en route after being requested to provide mutual assistance.

In spite of marginal cell coverage, the broadband reception enabled an internet link for Google Earth. The BGAN satellite phone was used when cell reception faded. The hand-held FLIR units were ready to be deployed and would have been a valuable tool in locating the subject.

NIF Communications Project completed

The NIF Communications Project was completed on time and under budget. The final addition was a BELL Ericcson ‘turbo hub’, supplemented by a Wilson Antenna booster and an external dual-band antenna.

Custom metal fabrication by SteelTec (Chilliwack, BC). Console and satellite supplied and installed by Chroma Communications.

This project was made possible by a contribution from the National Search and Rescue Secretariat’s NIF Program

Community Gaming Grant awarded

The Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation has awarded Kent Harrison Search and Rescue a grant of $56,000. This project will provide a vehicle for SAR volunteer transport in the form of a Chervrolet Suburban. The vehicle has been ordered through Mertin GM of Chilliwack, who have been able to negotiate special pricing with General Motors.

The group hopes to have the vehicle in service by March 2012.

The team was paged at 17:30 to assist the RCMP with a search for 2 overdue campers who were 6 hours overdue returning from a camping trip on the west side of Harrison Lake. The pair should have returned for a family gathering in Maple Ridge, but had not made contact. The team was stood down at 18:30 when the subjects alerted family members that they had broken down on the Harrison West Forest Service Road. 5 searcher hours.

The team was paged at 15:25 to assist the RCMP with a search for 6 lost hikers in Sasquatch Park. The group from Vancouver thought they were at Hicks Lake and had planned to hike the loop around the lake. They were in fact at Deer Lake, where a rough trail only goes part way around the south shore of the lake, ending at a creek. The subjects had contemplated crossing the creek, which would have put them into dense bush. Luckily they had one cell phone with service and were able to call for help. SAR members escorted them back to their vehicle. 10 searcher hours.

Search 2011/10/21

The team was paged at 17:30 to respond to reports of a flare sighting on the Fraser River between the Agassiz/Rosedale Bridge and Mt Woodside. Two modified SeaDoos were used to search the channels and gravel bars in the area with spotlights and thermal imaging cameras, but there was no sign of anyone in distress. Use of APRS greatly assisted in guiding the SeaDoos to high-probability areas in darkness. 40 searcher hours.

Agassiz Fall Fair 2011

Kent Harrison Search and Rescue participates in the Agassiz Fall Fair every year. It gives the team an opportunity show the community what volunteer GSAR is all about. This year was the first year the Spirit of Harrison made an appearance. Originally accquired in 1993 through the National Search and Rescue Secretariat’s NIF program, it was only late last year that the team finally purchased a trailer for the vessel.

The only asset missing from the display was the 12′ Logic polypropelene boat.
